WORKSHOPS

ATELIERS

SistersInMotion regularly offers low-cost, accessible workshops that focus on self-actualization and community-building through creativity. These workshops go beyond writing and performance to incorporate healing and transformation as we come together to create spaces safe enough and sacred enough for our pain and power to be revealed.

Please join our listserv below to stay updated and refer to our calendar for more details. Previous workshops are listed below and this page will be updated as more dates are added. We can't wait to see you all there!

Politics, Punishment & Protection: A Transformative Weekend

We are living in a late-capitalist age of political turmoil and interpersonal strife. While radical queer, leftist, and other social justice politics have given us ways to understand and criticize the systems we live in, they have most often failed to give us frameworks for understanding, preventing, repairing, and transforming the harms caused by conflict and violence. Over the past few years, many voices have spoken out against ''call out culture'' and ''disposability culture,'' which teach us that punishment and social exile are the only ways of dealing with harm. But what are the alternatives? What does it mean to create indispensability culture, to choose love? What ideas and skills do we need to address situations in which the people who hurt us are always the people that we live, love, and organize with? SistersInMotion welcomes facilitators Asam Ahmad and Kai Cheng Thom address these questions and more in a weekend intensive designed to give participants the tools to respond critically and compassionately to intra-community conflict and violence.

Note on Transformative Justice: In the context of this weekend's workshop, we will be referencing ''Transformative Justice (or TJ)'' as a general framework for understanding conflict, harm, and healing, as discussed by activists and thinkers such as Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Mia Mingus, and Adrienne Maree Brown. We understand Transformative Justice as meaning many different things to different people, but is united by a set of values that centre the need for social change in order to shift the conditions that bring about conflict and harm of all kinds. While TJ is often brought up in the context of accountability processes and sexual abuse, it is not limited to those situations. Please note that in this workshop, we will use the lens of TJ as a way of thinking about how to repair and respond to many different kind of conflicts. We will not be providing a ''how-to'' training on running accountability processes or focusing solely on situations of abuse.
